Apprentice Classes (summers)

  • Poetry Prompts

Participants will learn about and then choose from a variety of poetry forms including blackout poetry, abecedarian poetry, free verse and prose poetry, golden shovels, villanelles, sestinas, pantoums, and more. Model texts and writing aids for each form will be available in the style of a poetry buffet so that participants can opt into the forms that most inspire them. There will be an option to share with the group at the end of the session.

  • Object Prompts

Participants will choose objects from the provided selection and find context like history and meaning (either invented or connecting to a reference from their own life) for that object in order to create a story idea. Additional inspiration sources will be available to bulk out the idea if desired. The writing that results could be fiction, memoir, poetry - anything! At the end of the session, there will be an option to share with the group.

  • Inspiration Prompts

Participants will draw inspiration stems printed on tickets - such as places, character traits, objects, emotions, sensations, conflicts, complications, etc. - and use the combination  to create a story idea. The writing that results could be fiction, memoir, poetry - anything! At the end of the session, there will be an option to share with the group.

  • Promptstravaganza

Participants will be able to choose from a buffet of prompts and activities, some from previous sessions as well as new ones like grid prompts, exquisite corpse, round robin, first line/last line, image prompts, poetry strips, flip and point, etc. Some activities work individually and some as a group/pair. There will be an option to share with the group at the end of the session.
